Nothing is better than a fresh fall day, with crisp air, the scenery of the changing leaves and a warm drink in your hand. When days are as good as these, take advantage and enjoy the beauty of the season – and we’ve got lots of ways for you to do just that.
Whether you’re spending the day solo or with friends and family, a great way to start off a beautiful fall day might be by exploring the outdoors, like a local or provincial park. And you can borrow a park pass for Grand River Parks or Ontario Parks for free with your library card. With over 100 provincial parks included in Ontario and ten different Grand River parks, there are plenty of options for exploring. Just don’t forget to reserve the pass in advance before you trek out into the outdoors – place a hold on our website or at any WPL location.
And if you want a low-impact exercise while out walking, we even offer nordic walking poles! Holds are available on walking poles to be picked up at any WPL location, or you can borrow one in-person from our Eastside Branch.
Another cool thing you can borrow with your library card to use while enjoying the outdoors is an Explore Nature Kit. Kits come equipped with binoculars and field guides for caterpillars, butterflies and wildflowers of Southern Ontario.
Now that you’ve had a busy day outside appreciating the colourful leaves and light breeze, it’s time to light that fall scented candle and wrap up in a blanket with one of our favourite fall watches.

Meg Ryan Classics
If you love classic romantic comedy movies set in New York, either of these Meg Ryan classics is probably already one of your favourites but perfect for revisiting in the fall.
Like the DVD’s iconic cover, When Harry Met Sally screams fall, thanks to its scenic shots of Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) walking through a picture-perfect fall day in Central Park. The movie explores themes of friendship, love, and the complex dynamics between men and women. These themes are timeless and make for a heartwarming and thoughtful film that’s perfect for a cozy fall evening.

This beloved romantic comedy tells the story of Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), who initially clash as business rivals but unknowingly find solace in anonymous online conversations.
The movie beautifully captures the fall season, with scenes that showcase the Big Apple’s streets with the warm, golden hues of fall leaves. The city’s parks and streets are transformed into cozy picturesque scenes. Joe Fox himself even muses to his undisclosed online companion: “Don’t you just love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies.” As this quote reflects the season’s nostalgic charm and the sense of fresh beginnings–evoking the excitement of starting a new school year–it sets the perfect backdrop for the film’s romantic and transformative storyline.
