The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered on Amazon Prime last year and it was a rollicking good show, so much so that a second season was ordered. Season 2 just finished airing and it was tumultuous, heart-wrenching, thrilling roller coaster of a ride. The third season has already been confirmed but probably won’t air till next summer. If you’re still reeling from the show’s ending, here are a few titles on our shelves that will ease the gaping hole left from the show.
Every Summer After by Carly Fortune
If you aged Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, you would get Percy, Sam, and Charlie in Every Summer After. Just like in Han’s series, Fortune also utilizes dual timelines as Percy reminisces about her idyllic summers at Barry’s Bay and the one summer everything went wrong as she’s forced to return as an adult.

Happy Place by Emily Henry
Any list of summer books would be incomplete without at least one Emily Henry. Happy Place takes place—you guessed it—during summer. It’s about six friends who have been returning to the same beach house in Maine every summer. But this year something’s different, other than the fact that Harriet and Wynn are pretending to be together even though they’re broken up. If you liked the summer house aspect of the Summer series, along with themes of secrets and friends that are more like family, then you’ll love this.

Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan
Sam is an engaged thirty-year-old woman who visits her family’s Long Island beach house when she runs into her first love, Wyatt. She and Wyatt broke up when she was seventeen, so why does every encounter make her feel like her heart might explode? Sam is thrust back into the past and all the memories from that unforgettable summer come flooding back to her.

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
Auden isn’t getting along with her mother, so she’s sent to live with her dad, his new wife, and baby in Colby, a cute beach town, that he’s recently moved to. Auden isn’t really into partying or socializing–she’s been raised strictly by her grade-obsessed mother–but when she moves, she discovers a whole new world with Eli. Eli, a fellow insomniac, shows Auden a different side of town as they explore Colby under the cover of darkness.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Samantha observes The Garetts, her next-door neighbours, from her balcony with envy. They’re everything her family is not (loud, boisterous and fun), but that all changes when one day Jase Garett climbs the fence into her yard, beginning a sweet summer romance.

It may be the middle of August, but summer isn’t over yet! There’s still time for a breezy, romantic story that transports to sandy beaches, old beach houses, and beautiful sunsets. Find a copy of any of these on our shelves or place a hold at wpl.ca.
